Stephen Brown

Stephen is a composer, conductor, and teacher. He is an associate of the Canadian Music Centre and of the Registered Music Teachers Association. He holds ARCT Diplomas in both Composition and Theory from the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto. He is a former senior theory examination and syllabus designer for the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto and former Theory and Composition Department Head and Composer-in-Residence at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. He has twice served as a juror for the British Columbia Arts Council.

His compositions include a symphony, a violin concerto, a piano concerto, four song cycles, two overtures, two suites for orchestra, a missa brevis, a canticle for soprano, chorus, and string orchestra, an elegy for soprano and string orchestra, many chamber and solo works including two piano quintets, a 17 movement work for solo piano, and six suites for solo cello. Performances include those by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony Orchestras and the Sidney Classical Orchestra, of which he is the Music Director.

Besides his love of classical music, he takes an active interest in early jazz, country, and blues, singing and playing piano and guitar with Stephen Brown and the Bastion Band.

Stephen welcomes new students at any level. He uses an well rounded method in his music lessons. Besides an interesting and varied selection of pieces and studies he includes Technique, Sight Reading, Ear Training, and Music Theory.
